Marcia Holstrom, a Genealogy Instructor for MetroED’s Older Adult program, will present:  “Family History Research on the Internet:  Skepticism is a Good Thing!”  We are seeing more and more publicity about cousins finding each other on the Internet, and then with a couple of clicks on key URLs they have their genealogy back to William the Conqueror.  This presentation will include a healthy dose of filtering advice, but will also demonstrate the use of some key URLs that may lead you down the appropriate information highway to reliable sources that can actually help you to prove you are related to W the C or even John Wayne.  Marcia will discuss briefly the movement toward the use of DNA in family history research and also include some advice for beginning research and for keeping results in a usable, transferable and inheritable format.

Jose Medeiros, former SAN Systems Engineer with Intel & IBM, will give presentations on Building a Bootable CD.  The Building a Bootable CD presentation  will cover using a free tool called Barts PE which is a free utility that allows you to create a bootable CD with a 32 bit Operating System that runs entirely in memory and has the ability to read NTFS drives without having to boot the machines actual OS. This makes spyware and virus removal exponentially easier because it is impossible for any file to be in use on the hard drive since the machine is not booting from it. It also makes registry repairs much easier because you do not have to use the cryptic, restricted recovery console that has very limited commands to recover a failed hard drive or a damaged Operating System.  For more information, go to http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/.

Even if you don't know anyone who uses Skype, the paid service still offers significant cost benefits over traditional telephony. The SkypeOut feature lets you make calls to regular landline or mobile phones for far less than a typical phone company charges.  For more information, go to http://www.skype.com/.

Tom McCalmont, CEO and co-founder of REgrid Power, will give a presentation on residential solar electrical systems.  A roof installation requires that an array of solar panels be mounted on the roof.. The panels will convert sunlight into DC power which is sent to a device called an inverter which will convert the DC power to AC power identical to that being sent to you from the utility grid.  Power will travel from the inverter to your electrical service panel, and when excess power is produced by the solar, the power will flow into the grid through your electric meter. This will cause your meter to run backwards gaining you a credit with the utility company. For more information, go to http://www.regrid.com/svcs_residential.htm.
