Spreadsheet applications will be presented by the following Club members:

  • Alan Baker will describe using OpenOffice.org Calc for Spreadsheets without numbers to put information into tables, bring related information together, convert a file, and create a mini-database.
  • Hal Turk will describe how he enters data each month to maintain a historical brokerage report. He will demonstrate how he uses the report to get information on cash flow, share values, etc.
  • Bader Kudsi will describe his use of Excel to organize the data needed to prepare his tax forms. He will show a sample of form 1040 schedules A, B, D & E and California 510.

DeForrest Home, Club member, will give a presentation on Windows 7 features.  Windows 7 is intended to be an incremental upgrade to Vista with the goal of being fully compatible with Vista device drivers, applications, and hardware.  Windows 7 features include improved taskbar and full-screen previews, jump lists to quickly reach the files you've been working with, new intuitive ways to operate on files, Internet Explorer 8 improvements, free applications with Windows Live Essentials, better device management, and HomeGroup for easier connections to other computers and devices on a wireless home network.  For more information, go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/whats-new.aspx

Alan Baker, PC Club system administrator, will demonstrate the MagicJack  It's a Voice-Over-Internet-Protocol service for the home that allows you to make calls over a standard telephone.  The hardware looks like a wide memory stick and it plugs into a USB port on your computer.  The service includes a phone number in your choice of area code, unlimited calling in the USA, voice mail, and call forwarding.  It requires a broadband internet connection, but it costs just $39 for the first year and $20 for subsequent years.  Alan will explain its strengths and weaknesses, so come find out whether it's right for you.

Organize and find photos using visual keyword tags, text searches, and viewing options. Edit specific image areas with a single sweep of a brush. Enjoy creative options for sharing your photos in photo books, scrapbook pages, slide shows, and photo e-mail. Walt Cole, Club President, will moderate a discussion on digital television transition. With attendee participation, the pros, cons, problems, solutions, etc. of Dish Network, DirecTV, Comcast, AT&T U-Verse, TiVo, and over-the-air TV reception will be discussed.  Comcast Digital Starter with On Demand & HBO is now $29.99 a month for one year.  Satellite TV services are offering large discounts for 6 months or a year.. AT&T U-Verse offers IP TV with a DVR that can record four programs simultaneously.  TiVo and DirecTV plan a new TiVo DVR for DirecTV.  Some new TV’s have a Comcast card slot to eliminate a basic Comcast set top box. Jose Medeiros, former SAN Systems Engineer with Intel & IBM, will give a presentation on the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows.  This CD is a recovery CD (UBCD4Win) containing software used for repairing, restoring, or diagnosing almost any computer problem. The goal is to be the most complete and easy to use free computer diagnostic tool.  Almost all of the software included in UBCD4Win are freeware utilities for Windows. Some of the tools included are "free for personal use" copies so users need to respect these licenses.  A few of the tools included in UBCD4Win are paid for and licensed software owned by UBCD4win. Walt Cole, SJPC President will present a PIAB* from LapWorks featuring the "Futura Laptop Desk" and the "Laptop Desk 2.0". LapWorks, Inc. makes and sells accessories for your laptop computer. Learn about laptop ergonomics and laptop overheating. The products they sell go beneath your laptop in several ways. One application is with your laptop on your lap. Another is with your laptop on a table. Another is a unit that replaces a docking station when you are using your laptop with a separate mouse and keyboard. Walt Cole, club president and SeniorNet instructor, will talk about creating panoramas with your digital camera. Most cameras have a panorama-assist mode that helps in creating the individual photos that a computer program can then stitch together. The featured program will be the "Image Composite Editor" from Microsoft Reasearch. This is excellent software from Microsoft that is free to download.

The meeting this month is a field trip. You are invited to the Computer History Museum in Mountain View where the 50th anniversary of the IBM 1401 computing system will be celebrated. The event starts at 7:00 PM. The major IBM players behind the 1401 will speak about the project. Everyone planning to attend must reserve a spot at the CHM web site.
